Is There a Secret to Finding Your Passion?
Don’t know your passion? There is help!
Has anyone ever asked you what you are passionate about? Do you feel stressed? Does it make you feel as though it’s something you should know, especially at this age?
I had an aha moment years ago about passion. I am like most people, I am not a pro athlete or a music virtuoso. I always worried that I didn’t have a special THING that I did. And I think that’s more common than not.
As I got older, I worried that I might never find my passion. And one day I realized that I was thinking about passion the wrong way. We tend to look at someone like Michael Jordan or Oprah with envy. They seem to be truly living their passion.
And what I realized was that, yes, they have fame and Michael Jordan is an amazing basket ball star and Oprah is a famous talk show host, but are basketball and hosting their true passions?
If you think about it, in both cases, we only see them when they are performing. And we think their whole life is about those moments. But really, most of their day-to-day life is about the work it takes to get to that point. Michael Jordan has practiced free throws for hours, and no doubt gets sick of it. Oprah has that one hour when she is a master interviewer. But her day-to-day is a lot of work to get there.
What I realized is that they bring their passion to their life, to every thing that they do. And that is available to us all. I realized that what I love is people. I love meeting new people and learning their story. I love to find ways to connect to everyone I talk to. I love to help people. I am a connector of people.
Is that a skill, or a passion, or my purpose? It can be all three. And My biggest aha was realizing that we can bring those skills and abilities joyfully to everything we do.
Have you ever had a waiter or waitress who just seems to love their work? What about one who seems miserable? Either is possible. But imagine how the happy one feels during each moment of their day. How many people do they make a little bit happier?
It doesn’t matter what our job is, we can bring our passion to it. We can find the good in it and help others be a little bit happier. Every job has parts that are pure fun and other parts that are like tossing free throws for an hour, not as much fun.
I have seen it over and over. People who bring their passion to work are not only happier, and make others happy. They rise up the ladder faster. They are given opportunities that others are overlooked for. They get bigger raises and are given more compliments. Which would you rather be?
Think about your gifts. And find ways to bring them to your work.
