Boost Happiness For a Month
Happy habit tips
If you thought you could boost your happiness for a whole month, would you spend 5-10 minutes doing something fairly simple? Science shows you can. What is the magic thing?
This may sound corny, but it works. And it is simple, but not easy. Pick someone that means something to you; a co-worker, friend, parent, or child. Pick a teacher who really impacted your life. A boss, How about someone you see regularly at a store who always smiles and makes your day. Spend a few minutes writing down specific things that you appreciate about them. Write what it feels like to be with them or work with them. Make it meaningful. And write it all down.
Do they make you laugh? Are they someone who really understands you? Do they inspire you? Are they great listeners? What makes them special to you? How does it feel to know them? Take a chance and be a little bit vulnerable.
Now, if possible, make an appointment to meet them or see them to physically give it to them. This is the best scenario. If that isn’t possible, send them a snail mail letter. Even an email will work. But don’t take the easy way if you can actually see them in person, as science shows that this is the very best way to deliver it.
We think it’s going to feel awkward and even silly. But the truth is, it feels amazing for the person receiving it. And science shows that YOU get a boost of happiness for a whole month. Crazy.
I recently found a professor of mine on Facebook. He had been the reason I majored in English. I took just about every class he offered. I loved him. I now have three kids who are all excellent writers. Once I found him, I sent him a note through Facebook, as that was my only option.
I mentioned how much he had impacted me and even my kids. I also said I remembered a story that touched me about his wife. This was a school in Boston, so lobster was plentiful. His wife was a public defender in Boston, a highly stress filled job. I still remember that when she had had an especially stressful day, he would buy her a whole lobster because pulling apart a lobster to eat with your hands helped her forget her day.
He was extremely touched by my note. I felt fantastic because I had spent years wishing I could find him to express my appreciation to him. What a win-win. And now I know it actually boosted my happiness!
