We Are Not Our Thoughts!
We are the observer of our thoughts.
“It takes a little time to create a gap between the witness and the mind. Once the gap is there, you are in for a surprise, that you are not the mind, you are the witness, a watcher.” Osho
They call it our monkey mind. It is all of the 60 thousand thoughts that we have every single day (most are unconscious) that rule our lives. Have your thoughts ever had a competition going, or an argument? It is like there are little “angels” or maybe more aptly called “devils” sitting on either side of our head running our lives.
Only when we realize that we are only the observer can we find true peace. We need a small separation between our self and our thoughts. Michael Singer in the book Unteathered Soul suggests that we lean back and watch our thoughts go by.
Eckhart Tolle says that we should imagine we are sitting on a part bench watching the thoughts go by as if they were the joggers, dogs, boats, and birds passing. It takes awareness first.
The next time your thoughts take control of your mind, stop and try one of these methods to create a slight space between the thoughts and YOU. Notice that many times they are conflicting thoughts. Science tells us that of the 60 thousand thoughts a day, 95% are repetitive. The same thoughts we had yesterday. And 80% of those are negative.
Our minds are generators of the worst possible scenario. We latch onto the negative ones and let the positive ones slip by. One trick is to spend about 30 seconds savoring something positive that happened that day. It can be as simple as noticing the gentle wind on our face. Or it can be to savor a compliment that someone gave us.
This helps our mind to look for just a little bit more positive than negative.
Thanks to science we now know there are many proven ways to change our happiness set point. Giving people the tools to finding more mental calmness and happiness is the joy of my life.
